'WELCOME TO BIOLOGY
As you prepare for a new year at Duxbury High School, I hope that you will find Biology a subject that interests and challenges you. It is not an easy course (and students have told me that I am a challenging teacher) so you must put forth a consistent effort. Biology is "web-like" because it incorporates other sciences such as chemistry and physics. It is a subject that is part of many aspects of your daily and future life.
EXPECTATIONS:
1. PREPARATIONS: Be in your seat when the bell rings with your textbook,
notebook, and writing instrument. Bring your textbook to class every day.
Organization and preparation are big keys to success.
2. RESPECT: Be respectful of other students, the teacher, and visitors in the
classroom. Please raise your hand when you wish to be recognized in class
discussions. Inappropriate behavior and language will not be tolerated in this
classroom.
3. EATING: No eating in the classroom. For safety reasons, food is not allowed
in this science classroom.
4. BATHROOM PASSES: There is plenty of time between classes or at lunch for
these trips. Leaving the classroom should only be done in an emergency.
5. CHEATING: Do not COPY homework, lab work, tests or quizzes.
Consequences for cheating are spelled out in the student handbook.
Think for yourself.
6. NOTEBOOK: A biology binder must be kept for this class (I do not like to share
my binder with your other subjects) Your biology binder should have sections
or folders for class notes, handouts, lab reports, graded work, etc.. In the event
of a grade dispute you will have a record of all work returned to you.
7. LATE WORK: Late work will not be accepted unless you are absent.
Reasonable deadlines are given for all homework, labs, and projects.
8. MAKE-UP WORK: An area of the classroom will be set aside for make-up
work. Pick up any assignments, complete the work and arrange with me to
make up any missing tests, quizzes, or labs. If you are absent on exam day, the
exam will be made up the afternoon of the day you return to school. No class
time will be extended for makeup exams (it must be done after school).
A reminder, if you come to school later in the day but miss this class, you must make up
any and all work after school the same day (student handbook page 61).
9. EXTRA CREDIT: Extra credit questions may appear on individual quizzes
or tests, but extra credit assignments will not be available. I want all your effort
and focus on the material at hand.
10. EXTRA HELP: Extra help is a way in which you can improve your preparation.
I encourage peer study groups before exams and quizzes. I will be available at
the end of most school days and encourage you to seek out times during
which you could meet with me individually or as a group.
11. SCHOOL VACATIONS: It is common practice in this course to have a quiz or
unit exam during the block preceding a school vacation, long weekend, etc..
These assessments are announced well in advance of the date. It is expected
that students make arrangements with me to take the assessment prior to the
school vacation if they plan on leaving early for the break (which may entail
an afternoon or early morning appointment). I do not encourage you to take
the assessment upon returning to school following the break.
